Quake-damaged Big Island mission church torn down

Fifty-year-old St. Joseph Mission in Paauilo on the Big Island was torn down on Sept. 2, almost two years after the church was severely damaged during a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit off the west coast of the island on Oct. 15, 2006.

Because Our Lady of Lourdes Church, seven miles away in Honokaa, is able to accommodate parishioners who attended Mass at St. Joseph, the Diocese of Honolulu has decided not to rebuild the church.
