First Mass Offered in New St. Stephen Church
Parishioners and friends crowded the newly constructed St. Stephen’s Church on the Pali Highway last Sunday when the Most Reverend John J. Scanlan blessed this new church and parish hall complex. …
Bishop Scanlan spoke during the concelebrated Mass. His initial reaction was summed up in these words: “We like what we see.” He spoke of the difficulties that are being encountered these days in “putting into practice the guidelines of liturgical reform” in the construction of new churches. …
He also expressed gratitude to the Jewish Congregation whose hospitality during the year of construction permitted the St. Stephen’s Parish to offer Mass weekly in their social hall.

A+ with a gold star
Four Hawaii Catholic elementary schools started this school year with two great big gold star A-pluses.
Cathedral School in Honolulu, St. Anthony’s in Kailua, St. Anthony’s in Kalihi, and St. John Vianney in Kailua were fully accredited over the summer by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Each received the first-time honor with the maximum six-year accreditation.
In addition, all four schools also received a simultaneous six-year certification from the Western Catholic Educational Association, the group which insures the Catholicity and protects the Catholic identity of the schools it studies. …
According to the Catholic School Department, this is the first time Catholic elementary schools in Hawaii have received either the WASC accreditation or the WCEA certification.

A champ and his inspiration
Holy Family Catholic Academy students bring leis and cards up to fellow classmates Pikai Winchester, 12, and his brother Paliku, 5, during a morning rally honoring them at their school on Aug. 27. Pikai, a sixth-grader, is a member of the Waipio Little League team that won the league’s World Series against Mexico in Williamsport, Pa., on July 24. Family and team supporters used the name Paliku, who is undergoing treatment for lymphoma, as a rallying cry to encourage the Waipio team during the championship. Other Catholic school students on the Waipio team are St. Louis School’s Kainoa Fong and St. Joseph School’s Iolana Akau and Keelen Obedoza.
Editor’s Note: Pikai Winchester is now a junior at Grand Canyon University, where he was named a first team All-WAC designated hitter. His little brother Paliku is on the honor roll at Saint Louis School.
