50 years ago — Aug. 23, 1968

Bishop Will Bless St. Anthony’s Church Sunday

After 52 years of service in the Kalihi-Kai District, St. Anthony’s Church, built by Father Ulrich Taube in 1916, has made way for a new St. Anthony Church, (pictured at left) to be blessed by the most Rev. John J. Scanlan, bishop of Honolulu. The blessing and first Mass in the newly erected church is at 4:30 p.m. The new church occupies the same spot as the first church at Puuhale Road. …

The Faith was first brought to Kalihi as early as 1840 when Brother Calixus built an altar and Mass was offered in a rented store. This make-shift arrangement continued until 1916 when Father Ulrich built the first church.

25 years ago — Aug. 27, 1993

Pilgrimage to Denver

We gathered anxiously and eagerly around the gate counter at Honolulu International Airport in the early morning of Tuesday, Aug. 10, virtual strangers, having met only briefly at preparation meetings. Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario led us in prayer and blessed us as we prepared to board the airplane for Denver for World Youth Day 1993.

Although we knew that the six-hour flight would be the beginning of a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the 130 of us from Hawaii, we weren’t prepared for all the excitement, challenge and unity that we would feel by the end of our trip.

Town hall meetings scheduled to implement ‘Road Map’

Vicariate town hall meetings are now taking place to facilitate the implementation of the diocesan “Road Map for Pastoral, Program, and Facility Needs 2008-2013.” These meetings began in May and will be completed in the fall. …

The importance of leadership training as a priority activity and a needed resource is expressed in several ways – training for parish ministry leaders, clergy and councils.

A striking refrain is the desire of parishes to focus attention on leadership for and by youth.
