The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet will commemorate the 80th anniversary of their arrival in the islands with a 10:30 a.m. Mass, Aug. 25, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
In 1938, nine Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet came from the Mainland to Honolulu to teach in Hawaii’s fast growing Catholic school system. It was thEe beginning of an eight-decades-long mission of service across the islands in schools, parishes, diocesan offices, state agencies, non-profit organizations and ministries serving the youth, elderly and the poor.
Over the past 80 years, 52 Hawaii women joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, some who have worked in such far-off places as Chile, Peru, Japan and Kenya.
Today, 21 sisters continue to serve Hawaii in schools, parishes, in prayer ministry as well as with interfaith and ecumenical groups.
