Separation of parents and children immoral
I’ve been paying close attention to the separation of migrant parents from their children. Fortunately, President Donald J. Trump has just had a change of heart due to overwhelming pressure against the policy from all sides.
Sadly, some of his staunch supporters were preachers. Other surrogates have come up with one thing or another in defense of the separation policy. One example is Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He cited the Bible in defense of the indefensible: Romans 13:1 — submission to authority.
Fortunately, many other church authorities and people of goodwill have countered. Some prominent church leaders in the U.S. have denounced the separation policy: Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles, Cardinal DiNardo of Galveston-Houston (president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops), Cardinal Dolan of New York, and Archbishop Tikhon (Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of America and Canada).
Laws and policies made by humans can be immoral and unethical. In my view, the separation policy is just one! Sadly, many of the young ones will have been traumatized for life from their parental separation. I hope and pray they will heal in time, and be reunited with their parents soon. The U.S., its leaders, and people of good will must be humane and moral in the treatment of the less fortunate, migrants, and oppressed.
