The Hawaii Catholic Herald won four journalism awards in writing and design June 15 at the Catholic Media Conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Catholic Press Association prizes were for work done in the year 2017.
Darlene J.M. Dela Cruz won first place in the “Best Reporting on the Celebration of a Sacrament Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,000 or less” category for her “Conversion Stories.” The category judge noted, “Great piece exploring why two people turned to the Catholic faith. Nice job of digging into a few stories to provide a compelling read.”
Dela Cruz, who was the Hawaii Catholic Herald’s reporter/photographer from 2010 until this March, also won first place for “Best Layout of an Article or Column” in the same circulation category for “The Local Lenten Table.” The judge noted, “This layout’s simplicity and use of white space is well done.”
Hawaii Catholic Herald editor, Patrick Downes, won second place in the “Best Layout of Article or Column: National Newspaper or Wire Service” category for his layout of the Catholic News Service story “Ohio company’s candles helping church celebrate Easter for generations.” The category judge wrote of the entry, “A simple and effective layout that is uncluttered and permits the reader to easily take in the information.”
Downes also won third place in the “Best Reporting on the Celebration of a Sacrament Non-Weekly Diocesan Newspaper, Circulation 25,000 or less” for his story, “In solemn rite, bishop ordains Alfred Guerrero to the priesthood.” The category judge wrote of the story, “Excellent detail to help readers feel as if they were at the ceremony.”
Incoming associate editor, Anna Weaver, who rejoined the Herald in May, also won eight Catholic Press Association awards for her work in 2017 with Northwest Catholic magazine and U.S. Catholic magazine.
