Bishop blessed new Mary Jane Center lanai

Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario blessed a new lanai at the Mary Jane Center Jan. 29 thanking the Knights of Columbus whose time, talent and money built the much needed facility.

About 75 residents, staff, friends and guests, including a dozen Knights, gathered for the early evening ceremony on the 30×40 foot partially-covered structure. In the semi-darkness of flickering lanterns and a quarter moon, the bishop also thanked the Center’s staff for their “life-giving action” in the care for unwed mothers. …

The new lanai offers a convenient outside recreation and gathering place for the residence which is tucked deep in lush Kalihi Valley.

Road map to the future

Imagine a Google map for the Diocese of Honolulu. It can chart the church’s course from 2008 to 2013. It can illustrate the step-by-step directions on how to “witness to Jesus.” It can zoom in on the detailed picture of each of the six priority needs the diocese aims to accomplish on its way to the future.

This is in fact what the diocese has created with its Diocesan Road Map for Pastoral, Program and Facility Needs. It summarizes the findings from more than a year of surveying Hawaii Catholics on where they see the future of their parishes and the diocese and how to achieve that future.

The road map is being introduced to Hawaii Catholics the weekend of Feb. 9 and 10 through a 1.5-by-2-foot foldout “poster,” designed and printed at a cost of $20,000, that will be handed out to every parish family.
