Bishop Silva: Ash Wednesday/Valentine’s Day

02/08/2018 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Here is a statement by Bishop Larry Silva regarding Valentine’s Day falling on the first day of Lent.

In anticipation of possible requests for a dispensation from penitential fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday because it is also Valentine’s Day, I think it is most important for us as Catholics to observe the beginning of the penitential season of Lent by fully observing Ash Wednesday. While it is wonderful for spouses and sweethearts to celebrate Valentine’s Day, it could just as easily be celebrated on Mardi Gras Day, Tuesday, Feb. 13. Blessings to all in the upcoming Lenten season!
