Sacred Hearts Academy to host science and STEM symposiums for girls

01/23/2018 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Sacred Hearts Academy will host two free symposiums for girls in February, one in science for girls in grades 5-8, and one in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields for those in grades 9-12.

The 24th Science Symposium for Girls is Saturday, Feb. 17, 7:45-11:30 a.m. on the school’s campus at 3253 Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki.

The inaugural STEM Symposium for Girls is Feb. 24, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., also on campus.

The Science Symposium’s featured speaker is Dr. Kim Binsted of the University of Hawaii-Manoa where she does research on artificial intelligence, human computer interfaces, and long-duration human space exploration.

The Science Symposium will offer 19 interactive workshops facilitated by local professionals including a veterinarian, ophthalmologist, a chef, a team of medical doctors, and a scientific illustrator.

The STEM Symposium will have speakers from Boeing, CARBON 3D, Facebook, Genentech and Google. The teen-focused event will address the importance of technology and offer participants opportunities to network with employees from top-tier technology companies.

“We are excited to have two exciting programs for girls grades 5-12,” said Academy head of school Betty White. “Outstanding local mentors and mainland technology experts will further inform students about the dynamic careers awaiting them in the STEM fields.”

To register for the either symposium go to www.sacredhearts.org/symposium or call 734-5058, extension 232.
