The Most Reverend John J. Scanlan returned on Friday from the Washington meeting of American bishops. He returned as the new Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Honolulu. He was met at plane-side by the (left to right) Reverend Monsignor Benedict Vierra, P.A., pastor of St. Theresa’s Church, Mr. Joseph O’Donnell, business manager of the diocese, Bishop Scanlan, and Very Reverend Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano, chancellor of the diocese.

Iniki update: Holy Trinity staff visit Kauai sister parish
Six staff members from Holy Trinity Church in Kuliouou on Oahu flew to the storm-damaged island of Kauai Nov. 9 with a $1,150 check from parishioners for their sister parish, St. Theresa in Kekaha. They also brought cookies, candies, school supplies and toilet tissue. …
The trip allowed the Holy Trinity crew to talk to St. Theresa’s staff, offer their personal support and learn how the Oahu parish might provide further assistance. Up to this point, communications had been difficult at best. Only last week did St. Theresa get their telephones working again. …
Holy Trinity Outreach will send a part of its Thanksgiving donations to St. Theresa. Plans are also being made for Christmas support.

Arson fire damages doors of Maui church
Arsonists caused damage to the doors of Holy Rosary Church in Paia, Maui, on Thanksgiving night.
Holy Rosary deacon Patrick Constantino said that a call was made on Nov. 22 to 911 about a trash bin fire at the church but police responding to the scene didn’t see anything and left.
However, Constantino said that a dispatcher found the situation odd and sent someone back to the church to double-check. Around the same time, at 8:35 p.m., a passing motorist also reported the fire. …
The Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire, which was burning the church’s main entrance oak doors. It was determined that the fire was started by an accelerant thrown at the door and church porch, then set afire.
