Natural family planning expert to give talk at Pearl City parish

10/19/2017 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Pearl City will host a two-hour presentation on natural family planning by one of the world’s authorities on the topic.

Malaysian Dr. Lek-Lim Chan will speak on the Billings Ovulation Method, described as one of the simplest and most popular methods of regulating pregnancy, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Nov. 14, in the parish hall at 1525 Waimano Home Road.

The Pearson Foundation of Hawaii Pregnancy Centers is sponsoring the presentation. Organizing the event is Teresa Fredericks, a registered nurse and local Billings Method instructor and advocate.

The method is also used by women having trouble getting pregnant.

She said that Dr. Chan will spend the first hour talking about regulating births and the second hour on the problem of infertility.

Fredericks described the Billings Method as a technique by which a woman learns her fertility cycle through observation and is able to monitor which days of the month she is fertile and which days she is infertile. It is named after its developers, Drs. John and Evelyn Billings.

It is a method approved by the Catholic Church, which is opposed to artificial contraception. Fredericks said that the Billings method is a completely natural alternative to the birth control pill, which the World Health Organization has linked to an increased risk for cancer.

Fredericks, a certified instructor of the Billings Method for eight years, said she offers the instruction to anyone free of charge.

“It is a good thing for women’s health,” she said. “I will teach whoever wants to learn it.”

“They don’t teach this in medical school,” she added.
