The Saint Louis School football team has earned recognition from Catholic Athletes for Christ this season, placing in the organization’s Top 25 rankings among Catholic high school football teams in the U.S. in September, and garnering a top national honor for one of its players.
Chevan Cordeiro, quarterback for Saint Louis, was named “Player of the Week” in a Sept. 27 announcement by Catholic Athletes for Christ. The 6-foot, 176-pound senior received praise for his impressive performance in Saint Louis’ Sept. 23 matchup at Aloha Stadium against Narbonne High School. Cordeiro threw four of his seven touchdowns in the game’s fourth quarter, leading the Crusaders to a 56-50 win over the visiting California team.
Cordeiro is the latest addition to a roster of highly regarded Saint Louis quarterbacks, which includes former University of Hawaii standout Timmy Chang, Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Tennessee Titans leader Marcus Mariota, and current University of Alabama freshman Tua Tagovailoa.
Saint Louis cracked the Catholic Athletes for Christ Top 25 rankings this year, beginning the season at No. 17 after previously being unranked. The Crusaders jumped to No. 12 the week of Sept. 13 and held steady at the spot through the end of September.
The Honolulu all-boys Catholic high school is ranked among prestigious national Catholic high school football teams such as Mater Dei of Santa Ana, California; St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; St. Joseph’s Prep of Philadelphia; and Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas.
The Crusaders held an undefeated 6-0 record and was No. 1 in local Division I high school football standings as this story went to print. Saint Louis’ final regular season game is scheduled for Oct. 7 against Punahou at Aloha Stadium.
The Catholic Athletes for Christ Top 25 High School Football Rankings, presented by Siena Heights University and Global Football, are released every Wednesday from September until the conclusion of the high school football season in December.
Rankings are based on criteria which, according to a Catholic Athletes for Christ press release, evaluates “quality of the team and its players, strength of schedule, tradition, and quality of the team’s league, conference, region or district.”
The rankings are compiled by Christopher Lawlor, an award-winning writer, who is a voting committee member and advisor for several major national high school sports events, including the McDonald’s All-American Games and Gatorade Player of the Year.
All Catholic high schools from the U.S. that feature only four-year players on 11-man teams are eligible for consideration.
