Next year’s Red Mass, the diocese’s annual public prayer for guidance from the Holy Spirit for Hawaii’s public servants, is changing churches. Normally celebrated at the downtown Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, it will move to the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa at 712 North School Street.
The liturgy is at 9 a.m., Jan. 16, the day before the opening of the Hawaii State Legislature. Invitations will go out in December.
Bishop Larry Silva will be the principal celebrant.
The Mass is making a temporary move because the cathedral is being renovated.
The guest speaker at the Red Mass is Terry Walsh, president and CEO of Catholic Charities Hawaii. His topic is “immigration.”
The Red Mass has been a tradition in Hawaii since 1955. The special liturgy was introduced in the United States from Europe early last century and has become an annual event in Washington, D.C., and other major mainland cities. The Mass is named for the color of the vestments used for a Mass of the Holy Spirit.
