Photo: Pews out, carpet in

07/27/2017 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Recarpeting a church can be a chore, considering all those pews. But at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, Maui, what had been expected to take two weeks took only one thanks to the volunteer efforts of many, the organizational skill of Gil Hoopii (pictured top, right), and nearly two dozen Jobs Corps members recruited by Kathy Shimada. On June 26, the pews were moved in about an hour instead of the expected two days. Workers from Kahului Carpet tore out the old carpet and replaced it with new carpeting in just over three days. With the pews temporarily gone, a “cherry picker” was brought in to replace faulty ceiling lights. The pews were then returned to their places with equal dispatch.
