Pope formally approves Damien cure
The Vatican has paved the way for the beatification of Father Damien de Veuster, the 19th-century “leper priest” who lived and worked among leprosy victims in Hawaii.
On June 13 Pope John Paul II approved a miracle attributed to the intercession of the Belgian-born priest, the last step before he could be beatified or declared blessed. No beatification date was set. …
After beatification, certification of another miracle is normally required before a declaration of sainthood.
Father Damien, a missionary with the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, sailed for Hawaii in 1864 and served there for eight years. When a priest was needed for the Kalaupapa leprosy settlement on the island of Molokai in 1873, he volunteered.

Eighth grade artists’ work shown in Manhattan museum
Holy Family Catholic Academy of Honolulu, through a mutual association, was invited earlier this year to participate in the collaborative art project that included 11 Catholic schools from New York. Holy Family was the only school participating outside the state of New York.
Sue Bello, an art teacher at St. Martin de Porres Marianist School in New York, initiated the Christian icon art project to connect the Catholic schools in her state through an artistic expression of faith.
The collaboration was such a success that it caught the attention of the National Museum of Catholic Art and History. … Holy Family’s contribution was a depiction of the life of St. John the Baptist on 12-inch wooden squares created by the eighth grade visual art students.
