Vicar general Msgr. Gary Secor will celebrate the Mass of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, at 10:30 a.m., June 18, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa and lead the traditional eucharistic procession to the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace.
The feast, also known as Corpus Christi, is traditionally observed with an outdoor procession lead by a bishop, priest or deacon carrying a monstrance containing the sacred host.
Bishop Larry Silva started the 1.25-mile co-cathedral to cathedral route in 2007. Each year it draws hundreds of Catholics eager to make a public expression of faith along the hour-long walk.
The procession will begin after Mass around 11:45 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring water and sun protection. At the end of the procession at 1 p.m. in the cathedral, Msgr. Secor will preside over eucharistic adoration and Benediction.
According to “Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass,” a Vatican document issued more than 40 years ago on the feast of Corpus Christi, a procession of “special importance and meaning of the pastoral life to the parish or city” is “desirable … when it can truly be a sign of common faith and adoration.”
