Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, Honolulu’s fourth diocesan bishop who has served as the Bishop of Richmond, Va., for the last 13 years, turned 75 on April 15, the age at which all bishops are asked to submit letters of resignation, requesting retirement from the position of diocesan bishop.
Philadelphia native Bishop DiLorenzo was the auxiliary Bishop of Scranton when Pope John Paul II named him in 1993 to be administrator of the Diocese of Honolulu immediately upon the retirement of his predecessor Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario.
He served as administrator for a year before the pope appointed him as the fourth Bishop of Honolulu. Bishop DiLorenzo was installed on Nov. 30, 1994, at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa.
On March 21, 2004, after serving nearly 11 years in Hawaii, Bishop DiLorenzo was appointed by the Holy Father to be Bishop of Richmond. He was installed in Richmond on May 24, 2004.
