Obituary: Sister Therese J. Jacobs, BVM | 1929-2017

BVM Sister taught music at St. Catherine School

Sister Therese J. (Therese Carmelle) Jacobs, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) who taught music at St. Catherine School in Kapaa, Kauai, died April 6 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa.

She was 87 and a religious sister for 70 years.

Besides teaching on Kauai, Sister Therese taught music in Davenport and Cascade, Iowa; Chicago and Mundelein, Ill.; and St. Paul, Minn.

She was also a college teacher and on the formation staff at Guadalupe College in Los Gatos, Calif.

She also served in parish ministry in Des Moines, Iowa; Jackson, Miss.; and Kumasi, Ghana.

Sister Ther-ese was born in Des Moines, Iowa, May 9, 1929, to Harry Franklin and Mary Josephine (Mullahey) Jacobs. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1947, professed first vows on March 19, 1950, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1955.

She was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. She is survived by one brother, nieces and nephews, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM.
