Sacred Hearts send lay missionary to India
December 13 was a day of joy and gratitude for the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts in Hawaii. On that evening during a quiet vespers service in a Honolulu convent, a Mexican woman who had made Hawaii her home and the Sacred Hearts community her family was commissioned to a year of service in India.
“Today, God calls you to share our life and mission more fully as a lay missionary to India,” Sister Katherine Francis, provincial of the Sacred Hearts Sisters told Laura Chapa during the ceremony. “What is your response?”
“I embrace God’s call,” the 44-year-old woman softly responded. …
Laura is now in India where she is undergoing intensive training and will work with Sister Regina Mary (Jenkins) and Rose Henry (Reeves) and other members of the Sacred Hearts community.

At Red Mass, public officials gather for the church’s prayers, gratitude, blessings
Legislators, justices, generals and other public leaders gathered at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace on the bright sunny morning of Jan. 18 to accept the prayers, gratitude and blessings of the Catholic Church in Hawaii.
The occasion was the annual Red Mass, celebrated every January since 1955 during the week the state legislature opens as an invocation to the Holy Spirit to pour down wisdom and guidance on the state’s public servants.
Bishop Larry Silva presided over the music-rich liturgy in crimson vestments and miter, accompanied by 30 priests and 12 deacons wearing white albs and stoles. He preached on the topic of “legal and bloodless violence,” abuse perpetrated by the misuse of media, law and economic policies.
About 300 people filled the cathedral.
