Hawaii diocesan seminarian William “Pila” Tulua and Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities Alicia Damien Lau each received the Compassionate of Merit – Meritorious Recognition Award from the Grand Priory of America, a Jurisdiction of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem Oct. 28 at the Episcopal Cathedral of Saint Luke and Saint Paul in Charleston, S.C. The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus, founded in the 12th century, is an ecumenical group dedicated to aid those suffering from Hansen’s disease. Tulua has long admired the work of the order and Sister Alicia Damien is a long-time Kalaupapa volunteer and promoter of St. Marianne Cope.
