Father Edmundo Barut, administrator of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Ewa Beach, will officially become a priest for the Diocese of Honolulu when he is incardinated by Bishop Larry Silva at the 5 p.m. Sunday Mass, Sept. 11, at his parish.
His incardination into the Diocese of Honolulu means he will now answer to the Bishop of Honolulu and will have the rights and duties of Island diocesan clergy. Father Barut is originally from the Philippines. He was ordained for the Diocese of Bangued on April 25, 1992.
Father Barut, who turned 50 earlier this year, arrived in Hawaii in 2011. His first assignment was as parochial vicar, or associate pastor, for about a month at St. John Apostle and Evangelist Church in Mililani. Later in 2011 he was sent to serve as parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Church in Punahou and St. Pius X Church in Manoa.
In 2012 he was named administrator of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. An administrator has the same duties as a pastor, but usually a more temporary status. With his incardination on Sept. 11, he will also be installed as pastor of the Ewa Beach parish.
Father Barut was appointed in July as vicar forane of the Leeward Oahu vicariate for a one-year term. He previously served on the diocesan Presbyteral Council, the bishop’s priest advisory group.
A reception will celebrate Father Barut’s incardination and installation as pastor after the Sept. 11, 5 p.m. Mass.
