‘How good it is’

“Ecce quam bonum … How good it is … when brothers and sisters gather as one,” Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario told the 1,500 gathered at the St. Louis School McCabe gym Tuesday evening for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Honolulu.

The quote, from an old Latin seminary song, summed up the festive and joyful gathering of children and elders, nuns and brothers, priests and deacons, bishops and archbishops, people of all races and mixtures of races who came together in Jesus’ name to glorify the long and abundant presence of the church in Hawaii.

In the pre-liturgy gathering rites, representatives from major cultural groups presented gifts of food and artistry to Bishop Ferrario. In the Eucharist that followed, the unity of those present was celebrated in song, prayer and Communion.

Softball tournament a winner for diocesan food bank

The third annual Kupuna-Mixed Softball tournament, Aug. 26-27, at the Walter Victor Stadium on the Big Island collected a record breaking 6,500 pounds of canned goods and $110 for Hawaii Island Food Bank, a program of the diocesan Office for Social Ministry.

The first place trophy went to T & T Electric, Inc. for collecting the most non-perishable food – 1,105 pounds. Roberts Hawaii took second with 754 pounds and the Hirayama Brothers were third weighing in with 649 pounds.

Twenty one teams participated.

The brain-child for this event is longtime sport enthusiast Charlie Kaleo. Incorporating his love for sports and his tournament experience with a deep belief that no one should go hungry, Charlie organized the first “Help the Hungry” tournament three years ago.
