Six Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, all island-born, made their final profession in ceremonies at St. Theresa’s Church last Saturday. Presiding at the profession was the Most Reverend John J. Scanlan, Auxiliary Bishop of Honolulu. Also present were Sister Regina Catherine, C.S.J. (fourth from left), Bishop Scanlan (sixth from left) and Sister Mary Fintan, C.S.J. (eighth from left). Lost generation of Catholics
Pope John Paul II plans an August foray to continue stitching Catholic threads into an Eastern Europe torn by nearly five decades of communist rule. The Aug. 13-20 trip to Poland and Hungary is the pope’s third to the region since the collapse of communism. It should test his ability to avoid triumphalism while strengthening the church’s role as a moral cornerstone for a reconstructed society. …
The trip will take the pope to two countries which were leaders in the move to shake off communist rule. Although both have heavily Catholic populations, their hierarchies reacted in starkly contrasting manners to the communists. …
The Poland visit focuses on Aug. 15, World Youth Day, the first time it will be held in a formerly communist country.

Third St. Francis hospice facility will serve east Oahu
St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii is planning a new 24-bed freestanding hospice in east Oahu.
To be called St. Francis Hospice East, the facility is part of St. Francis’ move away from acute hospital care toward long-term services for the elderly, sick and dying.
“As part of our transition plan, we’ve decided to focus on our long-time center of excellence,” said Eugene Tiwanak, president of St. Francis Healthcare Foundation, “and that is hospice.” …
St. Francis is looking for a site between Kahala and Hawaii Kai and has developed preliminary renderings to show the community and potential benefactors.
The drawings show an extensive one-level facility with plenty of landscaping and open spaces. …
Meditation courtyards and mini-gardens will be part of the new plan. And of course, art. The facility will be home-like and family-friendly.
