Heralding back: Meeting the champ

06/16/2016 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

1heralding11heralding2Sister Therese, a Sister of St. Francis of Christian Charity and seventh grade teacher of Cathedral School, grasps one of the most powerful hands in the world when Muhammad Ali greeted her class in downtown Honolulu in February of 1980. The meeting took place on the corner of King and Punchbowl Streets outside Honolulu Hale, where the three-time world champion had just met Mayor Frank Fasi. “You are beautiful Hawaiian children,” Ali said, “Keep up the faith.” The boxer was in town for the Muhammad Ali Boxing Club Bouts. Both the champ and Cathedral Catholic Academy ended their earthly existence on the same day, June 3. Ali died at age 74. Cathedral Academy closed at age 80.
