Madonna, child to appear on Christmas postage stamp

For the first time in the history of the U.S. Post Office Department, a postage stamp will depict the Madonna and Child.

In announcing the design of the 1966 Christmas postage stamp, Postmaster General Lawrence F. O’Brien said the five-cent vertical stamp will feature a five-color reproduction of the central part of Hans Memling’s 15th century Flemish painting, “Madonna and Child with Angels,” now part of the Mellon collection in the National Gallery of Art …

The 1966 stamp will be issued on November 1, with first day ceremonies in Christmas, Mich.

A school with a mission

Maryknoll is a high school with a mission. A real foreign mission. On June 8, the small Honolulu Catholic high school sent a small group of students and faculty on its first mini-mission to Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Campus minister Cathy Agor and theology teacher Ted Stepp led eight students on the three-week helping-hands expedition. …

The group is staying at Assumption High School at the invitation of the principal, Maryknoll Sister Aurora de la Cruz. The young missioners will tutor students in English and math, do handiwork around the school and participate in local culture.

Permanent deacon candidates receive ministry of acolyte

In a simple ceremony during an early afternoon Mass celebrated by Bishop Larry Silva on Sunday, June 11, in the St. Stephen Diocesan Center chapel, 17 men received the designation of “acolyte.”

The men, members of Hawaii’s newest class of permanent deacon candidates, approached the bishop one by one to be handed a chalice and hear him speak these words: “Take this vessel for the celebration of the Eucharist. Make your life worthy of your service at the table of the Lord and of his church.” …

The reception of this ministry is a major stepping stone on their journey to ordination early next year.
