There is a spiritual side to the all-American activity of scouting, and in Hawaii, the Diocese of Honolulu Catholic Committee on Scouting (DHCCS) exists to promote it.
Naturally, such an effort would involve the earning of emblems, awards, medals and patches that scouts can display proudly.
Forty scouts received these honors at the 2016 Catholic Scouting Court of Honor Awards April 9 at St. Ann Church in Kaneohe. The pastor, Sacred Hearts Father Herman Gomes hosted Bishop Larry Silva as the honorary chaplain at the event, along with DHCCS chaplain Father Patrick McDaid.
The island scouting organizations that sponsor Catholic award programs include the American Heritage Girls, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Trail Life USA.
Male and female scouts earned seven different emblems or awards: “God is Love,” “Family of God,” “I Live My Faith,” “Light of Christ,” “Parvuli Dei,” “Ad Altare Dei” and “Pope Pius XII.”
Seven adult Boy Scout leaders were also awarded medals for their contributions to scouting: the “Bronze Pelican” and the “St. George” award. The Bronze Pelican recognizes outstanding service to the spiritual development of Catholic youth. The St. George emblem pays tribute to those who have made significant contributions with sustained dedication to the spiritual growth of Catholic scouts.
The chairwoman of the 2015-2016 awards committee, Ellen Cleghorn, emceed the ceremony.
