Ireland-born nun taught on Oahu, Kauai
DUBUQUE, Iowa — Sister Eva Sheehan, a Sister of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary who taught in Catholic schools on Oahu and Kauai, died April 1 at Marian
Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 98 and a BVM sister, as they are commonly called, for 78 years.
In Hawaii, Sister Eva taught first and second grade at Our Lady of Sorrows School in Wahiawa and Holy Cross School in Kalaheo, Kauai.
She also taught elementary school in Dubuque, Chicago, Maywood, Ill.; Casper, Wyo.; Hempstead, N.Y.; Rapid City, S.D.; Kansas City, Mo.; and Glendale, Calif.
Sister Eva was born in Killarney, Ireland, on April 12, 1917, to Harry and Ellen Connor Sheehan. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1937, from St. Paul Parish in San Francisco. She professed first vows on March 19, 1940, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1945.
She was preceded in death by her natural and adoptive parents; (adoptive siblings) sisters: Jane Therese Clifford, BVM; Pauline Clifford, BVM; Dorita Clifford, BVM; Norinne Clifford, SHF; and Ellen Vitorelo; and brothers: John J. Clifford; Rev. Daniel Clifford, SJ; and natural brother Daniel Sheehan.
She is survived by an adoptive sister, Margaret Kotlanger of San Francisco; nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with whom she shared life for 78 years.
She was buried in Mount Carmel cemetery, Dubuque.
