Composer-singer Marty Haugen is Mackey Marianist speaker

02/11/2016 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Popular liturgical composer Marty Haugen will be the keynote speaker in the next of the Father Mackey Marianist Lectures, 4-5:30 p.m., March 13, in the Mystical Rose Oratory on the Campus of Chaminade University and Saint Louis in Kaimuki.

The lecture, entitled “Pope Francis and the Jubilee Year of Mercy,” is part of a Jubilee Year Weekend of Mercy sponsored by the Marianist Center of Hawaii. Haugen will participate in a “Morning of Recollection,” the day before, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., March 12, with a number of other presenters.

The composer will lead a morning prayer liturgy with the Chaminade Choir. Offering additional “reflections” will be Mark Patterson, warden of the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility; Dr. Janet Davidson, Chaminade University criminal justice professor; Kimmy Takata; and university student ambassadors for Catholic Relief Services.

Registration and a suggested $10 in advance, $20 after March 1, are requested for the morning of reflection which includes a continental breakfast. To register online, go to www.marianisthawaii.wordpress.com.

Haugen’s March 13 lecture is free and no registration is required. You may attend either or both events.

Haugen is the composer of the “Mass of Creation” and dozens of sacred songs and hymns including “Gather Us In” and “Shepherd Me, O God.” Inspired by the encyclical “Laudato Si’” and other writings of Pope Francis, he recently returned from speaking engagements in the major dioceses of Australia.
