The parish council that could

“To free the pastor so that he can be pastor.” That’s how James Krause described a parish pastoral council. Krause is the secretary for the pastoral council of St. John Vianney Parish in Kailua which will conduct its 200th meeting on Jan. 22.

That milestone was the occasion of a parish party earlier this month for former and present members of the council. Just that fact that this particular parish has kept track of how many meetings it has had and is celebrating an anniversary is testimony to its success and effectiveness as a parish organization.

It’s THE parish organization at St. John Vianney, incorporating in a formal way everything from the boy scouts to the school board. “Because of the council,” adds Krause, “the parish’s good works are carried by the parishioners. The pastor is allowed to shepherd his flock.”

Church to celebrate first feast day of Blessed Marianne

The diocese will celebrate the first feast day of Blessed Mother Marianne Cope eight months after her beatification, on Jan. 23, her birthday. As one who has been beatified, she has been given a date on the liturgical calendar which may be observed in those particular places where she is venerated.

Those places are the Diocese of Syracuse where she grew up and entered religious life and the Diocese of Honolulu where she served the victims of Hansen’s disease for 35 years and where she died.

Bishop Larry Silva will celebrate her feast day Mass on Monday, Jan. 23, at 5:30 p.m., at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu. The public is welcome.
