The diocese’s fourth annual Stewardship Day, Feb. 6 at St. Stephen Diocesan Center, will feature talks and workshops by local church leaders that build on what organizer Mark Clark calls “the synergy of our mutual mission.”
The day sponsored by the diocesan Office of Stewardship and Development. It is free and open to all those involved in parish stewardship ministry.
After the 8 a.m. registration and a continental breakfast, Bishop Larry Silva will open the morning-long program at 8:30 a.m. with a prayer and comments. At 9 a.m., Sacred Hearts Father Herman Gomes will speak on “The Spirituality of Stewardship.”
Five presentations fill out the morning. Representatives from the national Catholic publisher Our Sunday Visitor will give a bonus workshop at 12:15 p.m.
Here are descriptions of the workshops:
- CRS’s Rice Bowl 2016: Blessed Sacrament Father Robert Stark, director of the diocesan Office of Social Ministry, will show how parishes can use the resources offered by Catholic Relief Service’s annual lenten program to help alleviate poverty around the world.
- Pastoral Planning at Your Parish: Jim Walsh, director of the diocesan Office of Pastoral Planning, will review the Bishop Silva’s new pastoral plan for the Catholic Church of Hawaii and show how parishes can create their own pastoral plans.
- The Call to Discipleship: Kristina DeNeve, the diocesan Adult Faith Formation Coordinator, will explore the connection between stewardship and a relationship with Jesus using the examples of St. Marianne, St. Damien and Pope Francis.
- Stewardship of Your Parish’s Finances: Lisa Sakamoto, Diocesan Finance Officer, will share best practices for managing parish finances and the role of the parish finance council and business manager/bookkeeper.
- Managing my Piggy Bank: The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, with finance professionals, will offer practical advice on budgeting, saving and practicing a personal stewardship of treasure. This presentation is open to all ages.
- Parish Stewardship Panel: A group of lay leaders will share ideas and techniques that have helped their parishes encourage and develop stewardship as a way of life.
The bonus workshop will describe services and products Our Sunday Visitor provides parishes to boost their stewardship of treasure — from enhanced offertory to online giving and website design. A light lunch will be served to those who signed up for this presentation.
