This coming summer, Jesuit Father Russell Roide, director of adult spirituality at Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose and the former director of the Newman Center at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, will lead two pilgrimages to European religious sites.
The full pilgrimage is June 20-July 6 and includes Krakow, Prague, Vienna and Budapest. One shorter option is Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest. Another is Krakow, Prague, Austria and Budapest.
The popularity of the Divine Mercy devotion and Pope Francis’ upcoming Year of Mercy make a trip to Krakow fitting. The pilgrimage will visit the birthplace of St. John Paul II, the convent, tomb and shrine of St. Faustina (Divine Mercy), the cell of St. Maximillian Kolbe in Auschwitz and the quaint Old Town of Krakow.
Other stops include the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa south of Warsaw; Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart and the site of the “The Sound of Music,” the mighty Romanesque Cathedral, the Nonnberg Convent of the Benedictine nuns and the Hellbrunn Palace.
In beautiful Vienna, pilgrims will celebrate Mass in the spectacular St. Stephen Cathedral. Prague will include Mass in the Church of Our Lady of Victory and a visit to the renowned statue of the Infant of Prague. Visitors can also take in an afternoon concert and tour St. Vitus Cathedral and Wenceslas Square.
