Chaminade, as a Native Hawaiian serving institution, anticipates $4 million in Title III grants over five years

10/09/2015 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Chaminade University of Honolulu, a federally designated Native Hawaiian serving institution, has been awarded an Alaskan Native/Native Hawaiian Title III grant through the U.S. Department of Education of $800,000 a year for an anticipated five years.

The grant total over five years is expected to be $4 million.

Over the next five years, the Title III funds will cover 48 percent of the following university activities. The dollar amounts are the federal contributions:

Student retention, advising and career preparation: $1,909,000 or 55 percent

Health professions, advising and student research: $350,000 or 17 percent

Faculty development, assessment and research: $1,709,000 or 62 percent

“The funding continues to make possible excellent academic opportunities for our Native Hawaiian students, who comprise 13 percent of our student body,” said Chaminade president, Marianist Brother Bernard Ploeger.

“We are especially grateful to our congressional delegation,” he said. “Because of their critical support, Chaminade has received Title III grants since 2003.”
