Manaolana | Makana Aiona: Sending you his love

09/11/2015 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Today’s tip: Send care-packages to students going to school away from home

I attended the University of Washington in Seattle and I can tell you it’s a HUGE campus. In the winter, the sun was only around for six hours and though we didn’t get snow much, the rain was constant so the commute was cold and wet. This is when I really missed the familiarity and comfort of home. But as usual, my mom would send me a package filled with snacks from home, as well as pictures and letters from my siblings. Sometimes she would even sneak in small religious cards or Scripture verses from her daily calendar with short messages of positive encouragement. I was blessed to have such support during those times. But not everyone is so fortunate.

Please consider sending small care-packages to college students from your parish who are away from home. Let them know their parish supports them during their time away. Also remember that seminarians are students too! This year, the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa is spearheading the “Adopt-a-Seminarian Project” sending care packages to each of our diocesan seminarians. If you’d like to donate items to this project, contact Gariss Pereira at 521-1700.

Makana Aiona is the diocesan coordinator for Young Adult Ministry.
