Prayers for peace

U.S. religious officials sought and led prayers for peace in mid-August as the Iraqi crisis continued with no promise of early or easy abatement.

Neighbor Islands preparing to meet their new bishop

Bishop Larry Silva spent his first week as bishop mostly as host to his family and visiting mainland well-wishers who had come for his July 21 ordination and installation.

His second week and a half was spent on the mainland for a bit of rest and relaxation and visits to places where he used to be pastor. He returns to Hawaii Aug. 12 for four weeks of travel to the neighbor islands and meetings with a variety of individuals and groups. …

Bishop Silva’s first neighbor island stop is to the eight-parish Big Island vicariate of East Hawaii where he will meet the flock in Hilo’s Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium for an evening Mass on Aug. 15.

“We expect a good crowd,” said Robyn Whittington, secretary and receptionist at St. Joseph Church in Hilo. “This will be our first opportunity to get up close with our new bishop,” she said.
