Serra Club of Honolulu member Chuck Furr attended the Serra International convention and board of trustee meetings in Melbourne, Australia, July 30-Aug. 2, joining counterparts from 12 countries.
Furr, who is from Kailua, is a member of the board of trustees of Serra International.
According to Furr, Serra members at the convention advanced the organization’s primary apostolate to encourage and support vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life.
“Outstanding speakers presented proven experiences which aid this essential effort,” he said.
Furr said the most significant statement came from Bishop Gerald Hanna of the Diocese of Wagga Wagga, Australia: “Serrans continue knocking on hearts that are unsure of direction.”
The Hawaii representative said the bishop’s assertion was in line with the knowledge that individuals must be recognized as having a vocation. Often, they are not aware of their impact on people and this encouragement awakens the reality of their calling, he said.
The Serra Club of Honolulu, Hawaii’s only Serra Club, is seeking new members. Seven have died in the past two years.
Catholics with a desire to support the call of the Holy Spirit to those men and women being “tapped” to the priesthood, religious life or deaconate are invited to join the Serra Club on Sept. 23 in the Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall in Honolulu, to view live “streaming” of the canonization of its patron Blessed Junipero Serra.
