Jayne Mondoy, the diocesan director of religious education, was elected to a three-year term as treasurer of the National Conference for Catechetical Leaders at its annual convention last month in Buffalo.
The NCCL, which furthers the church’s catechetical mission in the United States, represents bishops, pastors, diocesan and parish directors of religious education, academics and publishers of catechetical materials. More than 90 percent of U.S. dioceses are members.
Mondoy said that the organization has been “invaluable to me.”
“It connects me to my colleagues in diocesan and parish catechetical leadership, gives me personal access to our publishers, and offers a wide range of professional development opportunities,” he said.
As treasurer, Mondoy will be part of a four-person executive committee, which includes the president, who is from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, and the vice-president and secretary, who are both from the Chicago archdiocese.
Mondoy said she will act as the chief financial officer for the conference, ensuring “adherence to proper accounting practices and annual financial audits.”
She will also submit financial reports to the board of directors and general membership, and serve as chairwoman of the finance committee.
She said the job requires at least two mainland meetings in addition to video teleconferences.
Her selection to a national position is the latest in a list of acknowledgements outside of Hawaii of her work in the diocese.
The NCCL selected the her department’s three-part sacramental video series “One Ohana” as the 2015 winner of its diocese-level New Wineskins Award, which according to the NCCL website, celebrates “extraordinary achievement occurring in a diocese in the ministries of evangelization and catechesis.”
Mondoy accepted the award May 20 at the NCCL’s convention in Buffalo.
A NCCL news release congratulated Mondoy for her “extraordinary achievement.”
“The challenge of enculturation is to frame the Gospel so that it can be heard and received in a particular cultural concept. This is exactly what Jayne Mondoy has done, both beautifully and effectively,” it said.
Last year, One Ohana also won a bronze “Telly” award, a secular honor recognizing excellence in non-broadcast religious productions.
In 2013, Mondoy was awarded the Conference Theme Award at the Diocesan Information Systems Conference (DISC) in Dallas for her department’s program that offers faith formation classes to catechists via Facebook.
Mondoy has been diocesan director of religious education for 10 years. Before that she served as an administrator for Saint Louis School.
