Manaolana | Makana AIona: Love of a father

05/21/2015 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

I couldn’t believe what Abraham did on that mountain with his son! Abraham had decided in his mind that he was going to go through with the sacrifice of his son. He had completely let go.

I connected with Abraham’s story of faith when I was discerning my call to priesthood. But it was the wisdom God, shown through my brother, that bound it to my heart. Since I was about 12, I wanted to be a father. I wanted to raise my children to be great individuals and followers of Christ. Was God now telling me that I was to be a “spiritual” father to many children, teaching them to grow in faith? Did I have to give up my desire to have a wife and children?

“Maybe it’s just like Abraham, maybe this is a test.” It wasn’t until my brother spoke these words that I understood the opportunity before me. I decided to enter the seminary.

Today, I thank God for my journey through seminary to my wife, my first born son, and our child on the way. Today’s tip: God’s plan always defies logic, not because it’s illogical but because it’s superior to it.

Makana Aiona is the diocesan coordinator for Young Adult Ministry.
