50 years ago — April 23, 1965
Some two years ago wind and rain did extensive damage to St. Ann’s wooden-framed school building. Since then temporary arrangements provided the classroom needs of the children of St. Ann’s. This Sunday at 2:00 p.m. the Most Reverend James J. Sweeney, Bishop of Honolulu, will bless the new sixteen classroom school building, which replaces the wooden structures that have served the parish children for many, many years.

Nana i ka pono, look to the source, look to the teacher, look to Jesus. Nana i ka pono is a program produced by the Catholic Diocese of Honolulu to look to the source of our faith, to experience God in the richness of our tradition and cultural heritage, to discuss contemporary issues, and to highlight people and programs of service to the local community. …
With these introductory words, the diocese goes on the air Thursday afternoons starting May 3 from 4-5 p.m. on radio station K-108, 1080 on the Oahu AM dial.
The show, called “Nanaikapono,” Hawaiian for “look to the source,” will feature a message from Bishop Joseph A. Ferrario, Scripture readings, and guest speakers discussing a variety of topics related to being Catholic in Hawaii.

Conclave countdown: No shortage of scenarios
The world’s cardinals counted down to the start of the conclave in mid-April, discussing the church’s future in broad terms and sounding out potential papal candidates.
The cardinals were meeting daily in closed-door “general congregations” that touched on topics as varied as bioethics, relations with Islam and evangelization goals. They were to celebrate Mass the morning of April 18 before entering the Sistine Chapel, where the voting takes place. …
The most popular story line in the Italian press was that German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger had the solid backing of 40-50 cardinals going into the conclave, but that forces were already in motion to stop him.
