Father Mark J. Gantley, the diocese’s judicial vicar, officially joined the Diocese of Honolulu on April 15. Bishop Larry Silva “incardinated” Father Gantley upon the approval that same day of his “excardination” from his home diocese of Syracuse, N.Y., by Syracuse Bishop Robert Cunningham.
Incardination into the Diocese of Honolulu means he answers to the diocesan bishop and has the rights and duties associated with being a member of the clergy of the diocese.
Father Gantley is the diocese’s chief canon lawyer. He also runs the diocesan tribunal, the office that handles marriage annulments and other canonical issues.
He is also the diocese’s director of canonical affairs, the episcopal assistant for special projects, and the director of the mission cooperative plan.
He earned his licentiate in canon law, or J.C.L. degree, from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Ordained in 1991 for the Diocese of Syracuse, Father Gantley worked there for 10 years, and then in the Diocese of Las Vegas for six years. Bishop Silva first appointed him judicial vicar for the Diocese of Honolulu in 2007.
Bishop Silva named Father Marvin Samiano as judicial vicar in 2009 and reappointed Father Gantley as judicial vicar in 2012.
