The Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation was scheduled March 10 to break ground in central Oahu for a new affordable 300-unit rental housing development for seniors.

The housing project is called Meheula Vista. Plans are underway to build four apartment buildings on the property located on 95-1080 Lehiwa Drive in Mililani Mauka. Each building will have 75 one-bedroom, one-bath units. Among the included amenities in the Meheula Vista complex will be a stand-alone multipurpose building.

The apartments will be open to seniors earning 60 percent or less of Honolulu’s median income. The affordable living development aims to be a site where the elderly can “age in place.”

Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2016.

The March 10 ground breaking was slated to include a blessing of the site by Bishop Larry Silva. Other notable attendees expected at the event were Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Catholic Charities Hawaii President and CEO Jerry Rauckhorst and Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation president Rick Stack.

The Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating as a subsidiary of Catholic Charities Hawaii. The corporation owns, develops and manages real estate properties with the intent to provide affordable housing for the elderly, special needs individuals and other socially or economically disadvantaged persons and families.
