“Doin’ work!” In basketball, that phrase describes someone taking over the game and getting things done on their own. Since the “showtime” days of the Lakers to today’s “Big 3” (Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan; LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love; Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Bogut, etc.) the team game is being overshadowed by the statistical greatness and flair of the individual.
As followers of Christ, it’s essential to our spiritual growth and health to always remember who is really “doin’ work” in our lives. At our last Theology on Tap, Meg Hunter-Kilmer shared a story of when she, as a religion teacher, prayed desperately for help in saving the children in her classes.
She said God’s response to her plea was, “Save people? People already have a Savior and he’s much better at it than you.”
The topic of the night was being a missionary in your own backyard. Each and every one of us is called to be a missionary by doing one thing … being a saint. And what do saints do? They point to Christ. They know that everything they do and what they stand for hinges on Christ “doin’ work.”
