Arriving via Pan American from the West Coast were two officials of the Young Men’s Institute, a Catholic fraternal club, to arrange for their convention in Honolulu June 27-30 at the Princess Kaiulani. Be servants of justice, truth and love
At Hawaii’s center of government, the statue of Fr. Damien stands as a stark passionate plea to respect the sacredness of each human life. Last Thursday, standing in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace sanctuary where Fr. Damien was ordained, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago urged Hawaii’s political leaders to “protect that sacredness through appropriate laws and social programs.”
At the annual Red Mass, Governor John Waihee and numerous other leaders in government, law and the armed services listened as the cardinal, one of the preeminent leaders of the American Catholic Church, urged them to be “servants of justice, servants of truth, and servants of love.”
The prelate preached the “consistent ethic of life,” a theme he first developed when he took the helm of the U.S. bishops’ pro-life committee six years ago.

Preparing for Mother Marianne’s departure
The event was bittersweet — both sad and celebratory — as reflected on the faces and, no doubt, in the hearts of those attending to the removal of Mother Marianne Cope’s remains from her burial site in Kalaupapa for transport to her place of final rest in her motherhouse and hometown of Syracuse, N.Y.
The departure of her body from the land in which she served for 35 years is required by the church, now that the founder of the Franciscan mission in Hawaii is a candidate of sainthood. She is expected to be beatified this year.
The exhumation process formally began the morning of Jan. 24 with an official diocesan tribunal ceremony led by diocesan judicial vicar Father Joseph Grimaldi.
