Chesterton scholar giving presentations in February
G.K. Chesterton scholar Dale Ahlquist will give two free presentations in Honolulu in February. Here are the topics, locations, times and dates of his talks.
“The Philosophy of Islands,” Pauline Books and Media Center, downtown, 7 p.m., Feb. 10. Validated underground parking across the street.
“Puritans and Pagans,” at Sacred Heart Church on Wilder Street, 7 p.m., Feb. 11. Parking available behind the church.
London-born Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) has been called the greatest Catholic thinker and writer of the 20th century. He wrote a hundred books, hundreds of poems, 200 short stories and more than 4,000 newspaper essays. He addressed the topics of literature, history, politics, economics, philosophy and theology with humility, intelligence and humor.
The Chesterton Society of the Sandwich Islands meets 6:30-9 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month, at St. Pius X parish hall in Manoa Valley at 2821 Lowrey Avenue, Honolulu.

Makawao malassadas to help fund new parish gym
St. Joseph Church in Makawao, Maui, is having a malassada sale on Malassada Day, Feb. 17, to raise funds to replace the current gym with a new multi-purpose center. The current gym has termite and dry rot damage throughout, outdated electrical and plumbing systems, and is non-accessible for persons with disabilities.
Presale malassadas are $9 a dozen. Tickets are limited by various pickup times and are on sale at the St. Joseph Church office, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Scrub Bucket Ministries offering women’s retreat
Scrub Bucket Gospel Ministries is offering a weekend Lenten contemplative retreat for women titled “I Will Always Love You,” 7 p.m. Feb. 20 to 2 p.m. Feb. 22, at St. Anthony Retreat Center in Kalihi Valley. The cost is $185 and includes a private room with bath and air conditioning. There is room available for 20 women. Liturgy will be celebrated.

Delaware priest’s book on homeless includes Hawaii
Father Paul Mast, a priest of the Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware, who wrote a book about his six-month sabbatical with the homeless on streets and in shelters in eight cities including Honolulu, will do a book-signing on Feb. 21, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Pauline Book and Media Center in Honolulu.
Chapter 13 of the book “Street Sabbatical” is titled “The Streets of Hawaii — Homeless in Paradise,” and is based on the priest’s time in Hawaii last January.
