Manaolana | Makana’s helpful hints: Can I be perfectly honest with you?

10/24/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

“By its very nature, lying is to be condemned. It is a profanation of speech, whereas the purpose of speech is to communicate known truth to others.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2485) The point of speech is to pass truth on to others. The purpose of every word we say or action we take should be to communicate truth. However, it is not enough to simply have truth contained in our words and actions. Our words and actions must always contain truth AND love.

In today’s first reading, St. Paul reminds us that we are all one and to remain so we must “bear one another through love” (Eph 4:2). When we communicate truth we must remember to do it with love, “striving to preserve the unity of spirit through the bond of peace.” (Eph 4:3)

Jesus gives great direction on handling disputes in Matthew 18:15-20. I think the key to this advice lies in verse 19. Prayer acknowledges the presence of God in our lives and opens us up to truth and love.

“Lord, may we always speak the truth in love” (Day by Day with the Catechism, Oct. 24 prayer)
