Manaolana | Makana Aiona: The timeless

09/26/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

MAKANA’S HELPFUL HINTS

Today’s first reading (Ecclesiastes 3:1-11) is one of my favorites. Time is such an incredible concept. It’s the measurement of life on earth. Without time, we wouldn’t exist.

I saw a video that portrays a teacher telling his students that God must have created evil because God created everything. One student rejects that idea using St. Thomas Aquinas’ teachings on evil. Evil does not exist because evil is merely the absence of good.

Ecclesiastes tells us good things and bad things will happen, but no one is meant to stay in time. This is why God has put “the timeless” in our hearts. “For you have formed us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in you.” (St. Augustine)

Our souls are destined for eternity, for God. Once we forget that, we lose sense of our purpose on earth. In turn, we lose sense of the purpose of Jesus Christ. Knowing our purpose and who Jesus is, the journey of life on earth becomes a beautiful journey into forever.

Here’s a quote from photoblip.com for your young adults: “Life is like a rollercoaster. It has its ups and downs. But it’s your choice to scream or enjoy the ride.”

Happy Birthday to Malcolm Zara!

Makana Aiona is the diocesan coordinator for Young Adult Ministry.
