Mother Teresa reported cheerful after receiving pacemaker

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa was talking and cheerful after being fitted with a pacemaker, said Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

“I was getting quite anxious about her health, and now I am slightly relieved to see her talking and cheerful,” he told reporters after a five-minute visit with Mother Teresa Sept. 11.

Mother Teresa, 79, was admitted to the private Woodlands Nursing Home Sept. 5 complaining of high temperature and nausea. A doctor at the nursing home also said she had suffered an artery blockage that led to an irregular heartbeat.

Mass and luau honor departing Marists

More than 750 people said aloha to the Marists at the farewell luau at Star of the Sea Parish in Waialae-Kahala, Aug. 29. The event honored the Marist Fathers and Brothers, who have served in Hawaii for 60 years.

The day began with a Mass celebrated by diocesan administrator Father Thomas Gross.

In his homily, Father Gross said that the Marists had brought the fruits of their charism, serving the people with a devotion to Mary.

“For 58 years, your community has been serving this parish and the diocese,” Father Gross said. “On behalf of the diocese, I would like to say, ‘thank you.’”
