Manalolana | Makana’s helpful hints: Let it thrive

08/01/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

We always watch HGTV to see the latest home transformations, so when we moved to our new place with its yard of weeds, we were excited to finally be able to do some transformation ourselves! However, watching countless transformations on television gave us no idea of how to go from before to after, no money to spend, and no professional contractors to lean on! So we did the only thing we could. We went out and looked at what we had and found a way to let it thrive.

The same thing happens with our ministry to young adults. We come into it with a clear picture of where we want to end up, but with no money and no idea of how to go from before to after.

But by spending time with each person already in the community, we learn what they are good at and what’s preventing them from doing it. Once you learn that, work to remove whatever is in their way. Enable them to do what they’re good at by creating opportunities for them to do what they like to do.

It’ll usually start off looking like a disaster, but before you know it, you’ll be saying, “Wow, what an amazing transformation!”

Makana Aiona is the diocesan coordinator for Young Adult Ministry.
