John and Joyce Mondoy

St. Damien Parish in Kaunakakai, Molokai, lost two community members this past Lenten season, a married couple who were active stewards in the life of the church.

John J. Mondoy, 84, died on April 3 in Hoolehua, and his wife Joyce A. Mondoy, 71, passed away on April 11 in Honolulu. John was a music minister and Joyce was a lector. Both were also involved in bereavement ministries.

In the Molokai community-at-large, John was well known as a music teacher, instructing many groups of students in guitar and ukulele. He also worked in the pineapple and hotel industries.

Joyce was a long-time elementary school educator and the author and editor of several well-liked recipe collections originating from the Friendly Isle. He was born in Ewa on Oahu; she was born in San Francisco.

He is survived by sons Robert, Patrick, Tim and Roy; daughters Carol Wiles, Paula Scott and Teresa Mondoy-Jack; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by son Brett Waipa.

Funeral services were held at St. Damien Parish on May 9 and 10, and a Honolulu memorial service May 17. They are buried side by side in the cemetery of St. Joseph Mission Church in Kamalo, Molokai.

A final memorial Mass will be celebrated 7 p.m., June 6, at St. John Vianney Parish, 920 Keolu Dr. in Kailua. All are invited to share the Eucharist and refreshments afterward. Call the parish at 262-8317 for more information.
