Manaolana | Makana’s helpful hints: Patron of the church

06/06/2014 by Hawaii Catholic Herald

Following my wife’s inspiration again, we look at the Patron of the Universal Church, the saint recently added to the main Eucharistic Prayer. Soon, we will celebrate our fathers and for the first time I will be counted among them.

I am anxious to see my son face to face. I’m not sure if I will think he’s the most beautiful soul in the world or if I’ll be asking for more towels to wipe the guy clean (blood is not my strong suit). But more importantly, I’m worried about leading him on the right path.

While he is God’s, I know that he will come to me for counsel and support. Who then can I look to? Who is an example of caring for someone who is yours yet still belongs fully and totally to God?

Answer: St. Joseph, who was visited by an angel in a dream, asked to marry an unwed pregnant girl, name her child Jesus, and then woke up to do all that he was instructed. A man who has not a single quote in the Bible, yet spoke volumes through his action. How can I be a better person of action? Where am I speaking too much and not doing enough?

St. Joseph, pray for us.
