Manaolana | Sidebar: June 6, 2014

Quote

“Doubts with the faith and struggles are good things because that’s going to make your faith stronger. Even if there are elements of the church you can’t agree with, don’t ever give up your relationship with Jesus Christ. That is a living, real relationship.”

Overcoming great odds

1manaolana-saintunderBlessed Marie-Rose Durocher’s faith journey was filled with challenges, yet she met each one with quiet courage. The co-founder of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary fought poor health, poverty and tension with others throughout her life but never lost sight of God.

Eulalie Durocher was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1811. At age 18 she left home to help her brother, a priest, at his parish as a worker and housekeeper; all the while, she harbored a desire to become a religious and establish a community of teaching sisters.

She maintained the parish duties until she was urged in 1843 to help establish the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, taking the name Marie-Rose once she did so. For six years she helped the congregation flourish despite a host of difficulties until she succumbed to her weak constitution in 1849. (americancatholic.org, catholic.org)
